The University of Sheffield is continuing to remove the barriers to higher education for people around the world with new and exciting online courses that are free and accessible to all. Our short online courses give everyone an introductory taste of learning at the University of Sheffield – all you need is an internet connection.

We have joined an international community of partners on FutureLearn, the first UK-led massive open online course (MOOC) learning platform. Developed by the Open University and consolidating over 40 years’ experience and expertise in online and distance education, the platform allows us to deliver high-quality academic content over the web, opening our learning, teaching and research to a global community of learners.

You can choose any course that interests you and explore the subject through a blend of videos, articles, discussions and interactive activities. Whether for a taste of further academic study, for evidence of continuing professional development or just for fun, you can study at a pace that suits you. FutureLearn is an integrated social learning experience so you can communicate with an international community of learners and have your say on the topics that interest you.

Since the University of Sheffield began producing MOOCs in September 2013 we have launched 10 original courses on FutureLearn, attracting over 375,000 learners to join our courses from 180 countries. Courses have varied widely in their aims including widening participation, public engagement with research, broadening access to high-quality teaching, spreading the word about the university’s reputation for excellence, enhancing the learning experience of current students, improving employability and encouraging new applications to the university.
